The research group ‘Aetiologies’ focuses on the fascination of beginnings and the search for origins from the point of view of their present and retrospective construction and functionalisation.

The ‘Aetiologies’ research group brings together scholars from various institutions in the fields of religious studies and theology, classical and modern philology, philosophy and political science.

Within the framework of the research group, eight sub-projects deal with founding and explanatory narratives in religious-mythological, theological, political, scientific, and literary texts as well as in visual media.

The ‘Aetiologies’ research group is an inter-institutional association of researchers from the two Berlin universities, Humboldt-Universität and Freie Universität, as well as the FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Leibniz Centre for Literary and Cultural Research.
