According to information released by the DFG on Monday, a total of 13 new research groups are being funded across Germany. Together, they will receive around 48.6 million euros. The new collaboration projects will be funded for a maximum of two four-year periods. Research groups enable researchers to address current and pressing issues in their fields and take their research in new directions.

The concept of aetiology, long established in Ancient Studies research, refers to a narrative principle that establishes a causal link between the present of a society - at a specific historical point in time - and narratives of beginnings, reasons and causes. The research group “Aetiologies – Founding Narratives in Literary, Scholarly, and Scientific Discourses” explores the potential of this concept in an interdisciplinary fashion and examines creation narratives, literary and scientific founding scenes, as well as political narratives of foundation with a view to their respective rhetorics. The new DFG research group will be funded with around 3.4 million euros over the next four years.

The German Research Foundation is currently funding 182 Research Units, 12 Clinical Research Units and 17 Research Training Groups across Germany.
